Sunday evening at 10:36pm the station was dispatched for the rescue to assist Station 44 with an accident involving 2 vehicles with several subjects trapped on Rt.1 NB just south of the Paddock Road overpass. Rescue 45 w/7 commanded by Captain Austin Moorhead quickly made the response and arrived to find Smyrna and EMS units working an accident involving a tractor trailer and a passenger car. Smyrna units arrived to find a van with 4 subjects trapped on the side of the roadway and a tractor trailer off the roadway into a wooded area with the driver ejected. The crew from Rescue 45 assisted with extrication of two passengers and assisted with searching for any additional occupants from the tractor trailer. All occupants were extricated within 45 minutes. The driver of the tractor trailer was airlifted to CER on DSP Trooper 4, while 3 of the other occupants of the van were air lifted to CER on MSP Trooper 2 and JEFFSTAT 1 out of NJ. The last occupant was transported to KGH by B-26. DNREC and HAZMAT 57 responded to handle fluid spills from the vehicles. Both NB and SB Rt.1 were closed for several hours while the accident was investigated and the roadway cleaned. Capt. Chip Thompson (44-18) had the command. Photo's Courtesy Amber Johnson.
