April 20, 2026, 16, 2026 Clayton, DE – The fire service is called upon to handle many different types of emergencies and must be trained and ready when the call comes in. On Monday April 20, 2026, the Clayton Fire Company and the Citizens’ Hose Company of Smyrna trained together at the Delaware State Fire School on how to handle propane type fires, these could be natural gas type fires also. Propane and Natural gas are the two most common ways we heat homes in our districts and is used in commercial and other style facilities. Both companies respond to many gas leaks or gas smell emergencies during the year. It is rare to have an actual fire with these gases, but when you do timing and procedure is critical in getting these under control. Deputy Chief Tim Conrad of the Clayton Fire Company stressed the value of training in these types of situations and training with companies you respond with is key in a successful operation, you get a lot of value in this style of combined training. A total of 25 members from the two companies received training Monday night.
